I think that in addition to his considerable experience and courage, Blair's more objective position with regards to whatever 'Euro-scepticism' exists in Britain as well as the reluctance to scrap sterling in favour of the euro, would be an additional advantage for Europe if he was nominated President.<br /><br />I suspect that Sarkozy feels a bit nostalgic and would have wished to continue his own term of European presidency for a longer period. Maybe he had some good ideas and not enough time to try to apply them.<br /><br />Another reason why Blair would be a good choice might be because he would be less inclined to be associated with the 'Euroclub'.<br /><br />But you are right.
